The Work of Ricky Swallow often portrays both the finest of detail and craftsmanship through a variety of media, in particular the use of the natural material wood. His sculptures and objects appear very intricate and therefore it appeared obvious to me that the artist has spent many hours in crafting his work. I therefore wanted to create an environment that allows Ricky to engage both in an inside, but more importantly in an outside workspace with nature and the natural environment that surrounded him. This reflects upon the heavy use of a variety of timbers in my design to suggest such concentration on texture and fine detailing that is clearly evident throughout his work. Furthermore, the staircase is designed to allow Ricky Swallow to maneuver his artwork easily back and forth from the gallery with relative ease and flexibility. This is to respond to the fact that his work such as 'Killing Time' is often of a considerable size and weight, hence the low risers, broad tread and steady incline.
